WasteCap completed its final tracking and waste inspections for the School Sisters of St. Francis on June 30, 2017. This yearlong project, located in Campbellsport, featured the demolition and salvaging of five buildings and the associated infrastructure of the former convent. This project surpassed its 85% landfill diversion goal by boasting a final rate of 98%.

After many years of service to the sisters, the buildings were determined obsolete. The School Sisters of St. Francis engaged General Capital Group, Bedrock Construction and Northtrack Construction to lead demolition efforts. WasteCap was tasked with providing third-party waste management services for salvage and recycling efforts.

As a third party waste management service consultant, WasteCap educated project management staff on best practices, conducted monthly inspections and compiled data tickets into WasteCapTRACE, the team's proprietary tracking software.

The six-building demolition project included maximizing building component recycling and reuse based on practicality and diversion costs.

At the project's close, WasteCap surpassed the original diversion goal of 85% with a landfill diversion rate of 98.48%. Over 25,000 tons of non-hazardous solid waste generated by demolition were reused or recycled.

Materials recycled included:
  • doors
  • sinks
  • built-in cabinets
  • wood
  • asphalt
  • concrete

Since the project ended, the School Sisters of St. Francis filled the area with a memorial honoring the former convent grounds. Travis Blomberg, Executive Director of WasteCap, attended a dedication ceremony held Saturday, October 14.

I understand their position when they have a report that there is a need to reduce the production of waste, then they will go to any lengths to implement all this, I understand that on the one hand it is not entirely necessary, but even such a drop will make it better for everyone!

Watching historical buildings like the St. Joseph Convent being demolished can evoke mixed emotions. On one hand, it's sad to see a piece of local history go. On the other, salvage projects like this provide a unique opportunity to preserve elements that can continue to enrich our community. It's heartening to know that efforts are being made to salvage materials for reuse, ensuring that the spirit of the convent lives on in new forms. Looking forward to seeing how these salvaged materials contribute to future projects in Campbellsport!
