Recycling Pallets: An
Opportunity to Save Money
Many of the
pallets used today are designed for a single use and then disposal. These low quality, wood pallets are easily damaged and
quickly end up in the dumpster. The volume that these discarded pallets
occupy in the dumpster may require extra trash hauls and thus incur higher
operating expenses for your company.
Other pallets are
made of sturdy, high-quality wood and can be used numerous times. Even if
they become damaged, they often can be repaired with new stringers (the
long slats on top and bottom).
Recycling options
exist for both types of pallets. Lower-grade
pallets can be collected and shredded or chipped for use as mulch, compost
bulking agent, or landfill cover. Higher-grade pallets that are undamaged
can be returned to their original users for reuse or sold to pallet
brokers. Damaged, high-grade pallets can be donated or sold to pallet
refurbishers, who replace parts, renail loose boards, and resell the
pallets to wholesalers, shippers, and other businesses who use large
quantities of pallets.
