Simple Guidelines for Recycling Paint:
1.) DONATING EXTRA PAINT:
Find a school, community organization, or non-profit, which would benefit
from the donation of paint. The Building
Materials Resource Center (BMRC) located in Roxbury, accepts donations of paint and other
reusable building supplies, which it later sells for a small handling fee. The BMRCs phone number is 617-442-8917.
2.) RECYCLING PAINT: A thorough paint recycling program for businesses
has not yet been established in Massachusetts. Statewide,
there are 80 municipal paint collection sites for residents; several of these programs
will accept paint from businesses. A business
should contact their municipality to determine if the citys program accepts
materials from businesses. If they do, it is
probably on a pay/gallon program to cover the cost of disposal. If a municipal program is not available, a
business will need to find a paint recycling company on their own (currently WasteCap has
no suggestions) or dispose of the paint as described below.
3.) DISPOSING LATEX PAINT:
Latex paint is not hazardous; therefore it can be thrown away as solid
waste. Leave the paint can uncovered and
allow the paint to harden. Once the paint can
has dried out, it can be placed in the trash.
4.) DISPOSING OIL BASED PAINT: Oil based paint is considered hazardous
waste and requires special disposal by a hazardous waste hauler. (For further information on hazardous waste
contact the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, www.state.ma.us/dep.)
The Hazardous Waste Transporter List by state and city, which includes a
listing of hazardous waste paint haulers, is available at www.state.ma.us/dep/bwp/dhm/dhmpubs.htm.
