When You Buy a New
Pair of Sneakers This Summer
Give Your Old Pair a Second Life!
Summertime activities can put a lot wear your
sneakers and before you know it, you need a new pair. Don’t throw the
old pair out, they still have value! Your old sneakers can be recycled
through Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program (www.nike.com/nikebiz/nikebiz.jhtml?page=27&cat=reuseashoe).
The goal of the program is to reuse 2 million pairs of shoes
annually, removing them from our waste stream.
How does the Reuse-A-Shoe Program work?
Simply take your old pair (any brand) of athletic
shoes to any of the locations listed on: www.nike.com/nikebiz/nikebiz.jhtml?page=27&cat=reuseashoe&subcat=collection
There are several locations in Massachusetts.
Nike suggests that you call the store before to make sure they are
currently participating.
What happened to the old sneaker materials?
According to Nike, the old sneakers are first grinded
up and then separated into three categories:
- Rubber
from the outsole is used to make soccer, football and baseball fields
as well as weight room flooring.
- Foam
from the mid sole is used to for synthetic basketball and tennis
courts, as well as playground surface tiles.
- The
granulated fabric from the shoe uppers becomes the padding under
hardwood basketball floors.
Some
Recycled Shoe Facts:
