Polystyrene Foam Packaging
Often
incorrectly referred to as STYROFOAM*, polystyrene (PS) foam
packaging is a material that cushions, insulates, and protects products
during distribution. This includes custom shaped material used to package
electronics and appliances, loose fill packaging often called “peanuts”,
blocks of foam which protect furniture and appliances, and containers used
to preserve perishable foods and medicines.
PS foam plastics are often indicated by the symbol:

Recycling Tips:
- Find an available polystyrene recycling service by
using the Alliance of Foam
Packaging Recyclers’ website

or

- Once you have identified a service that suits your
needs, call them to verify drop-off or pick-up times and check to see
what types of PS material they accept.
- Make sure your PS is clean and free of any plastic
film, loose parts or glued-on cardboard.
- Check to see if they accept other recyclables to
streamline your recycling efforts.
