Questions:
What are CRT's? Why are they banned from                      landfills and incinerators? Where can I recycle                      them?

Answer:
Massachusetts has developed a solid waste ban, prohibiting the disposal of Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs).  CRTs are the main component in a television or computer monitor's display unit and contain several pounds of lead, a toxic substance.  When intact, CRTs pose little or no environmental risk; when broken or destroyed, CRTs are considered a hazardous waste.  Recycling old televisions and computer monitors or donating them for reuse ensures that CRTs are kept out of landfills and incinerators where their destruction releases lead into the environment.  For a list of companies that recycle computers, consult the Recycling Services Directory (available online at WasteCap's publications page) or contact WasteCap at (617) 236-7715.
