Be Aware of the Difference:
Recycled vs. Recyclable
Many times consumers are confused between the terms
"recyclable" and "recycled" when it comes to purchasing products.
A product that claims to be "recylable" does not mean that
its is made from recycled materials. It should mean that it can be collected, reprocessed,
and resold as another product. Whether or not it is actually recyclable depends upon
whether or not there are local recyclers willing to accept the material.
A product that claims to be "recycled" should mean that it
is actually made with recycled materials. It does not necessarily mean the product is made
entirely of recycled materials. Carefully read labels to find out what percentage of the
product is actually made from recycled materials.
Beware of the recycling symbol that accompanies both the
"recyclable" and "recycled" terms on products. This can make things
confusing. Supposedly, if a product is made with recycled materials, it should have a solid
circle surrounding the chasing arrows symbol. WasteCap suggests that you read the
product label to be absolutely sure of what you are purchasing.
