Green Your Packaging with
Recycled-Content Paperboard Cartons

Paperboard folding cartons package everything from aspirin to cereal, toothpaste to software. Paperboard with post-consumer recycled content has lower environmental impacts and often costs less than virgin.  The best recycled-content paperboards are also almost identical to virgin in performance and appearance.  So how can you take advantage of the benefits of recycled paperboard?  Here are some options:

  1. When purchasing products, look for those packaged in recycled-content paperboard rather than virgin.*  (Often, companies will label their boxes as recycled.)
  2. Ask your vendors to switch to using recycled packaging.
  3. Purchase recycled-content paperboard for your business’ packaging needs.
  4. Read the Alliance for Environmental Innovation’s publication Greener Cartons -- A Buyer's Guide to Recycled-Content Paperboard.  This new guide surveys the options in recycled paperboard and includes testimonials from packaging engineers.  The guide is available at  at http://www.environmentaldefense.org/Alliance/.

*A sampling of companies that package their products with recycled-content paperboard:

Colgate toothpaste (35%**)

Excedrin (30%**)

Hewlett-Packard printer cartridges (50%**)

Kodak film boxes (75%**)

UPS overnight shipping envelopes (80%**)

**minimum post-consumer recycled content
