Initiated and developed by WasteCap of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Program
is now
managed by E. L. Harvey &
Sons,
a full service recycling operation based in Westborough.
As much as 35 tons of white marine shrink wrap was collected and
recycled during previous individual years through this innovative program.
Marine shrink-wrap is used to protect boats
from winter weather, sunshine, and other elements that might be harmful
during the dry-docking season. It has been identified by marina
owners, the American Plastics Council, and others as a serious waste
disposal problem for both the marina industry and local landfills where
the material is ultimately laid to rest. Considering that an
estimated 130 tons of shrink wrap was sold along the Massachusetts
coastline in 2003, the potential waste reduction by recycling is nothing
less than enormous.
In 2004, plastic shrink wrap from approximately 2,500 boats was recycled
by utilizing the Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Program. Marinas along the
Massachusetts coast accessed 17 collection sites, diverting over 37 tons
of plastic shrink wrap from landfills. E. L. Harvey and Sons donated
extensive roll-off, collection, and baling services to the
project.
Boat
shrink wrap collection generally takes place from
April through the end of June. All requests and inquires can now be
directed to Tom Lynch of
E .L. Harvey at 1-800-321-3002.
